They are mostly well balanced (More so since 1.2), following quite closely the way the vanilla heroes are made. (You can take your heroes along as the campaign progresses, so by later maps you may start with a bunch of level 15+ heroes, which does a number on game balance.This was made mainly for personal use, but anyone may use it. If that happens to you, it's highly recommended to play random maps instead, which will give the AI far fewer unfair advantages and are more fun in general, since you don't need to rely on your over-levelled heroes quite as much. Many players hit a rock wall in the second map (excluding the tutorial) of the Elf campaign. The most important bit of advice to keep in mind, though, is that the campaign is deceptively difficult, depending on your playing style. (As well as the excellent official beginner's guide, which is in the guides section of the community page.) There's a thread a bit further down this forum called "noob central" which has a lot of advice for new players, which you might want to read if you get stuck. Still, the base game should give you plenty of entertainment for its money, particularly since you bought it during the sale. The extra stuff is nice, but the extra strategic map features (Specifically, mystic city upgrades and racial governance) are what gives the game its staying power as far as I'm concerned. I'd grade the base game a solid B+ on release, raised to A- by the post-release patches and extra features, but the expansions easily boost it to A+ territory by adding extra victory conditions, extra strategic map complexity, and tons and tons of extra stuff.
